Washing cashmere
Frequency is key
Unlike everyday garments, cashmere sweaters thrive on minimal washing. Frequent cleaning can damage the delicate fibers. Aim for two washes per season at most, prioritizing airing and spot cleaning whenever possible.
Handwashing is ideal
For optimal care, handwashing is highly recommended. Fill a basin with cool water using a detergent specifically formulated for cashmere. Gently swish the sweater for a few minutes, avoiding harsh rubbing or wringing. Rinse thoroughly with cool water and lay flat to dry on a clean towel.
Machine washing with caution
If handwashing isn't archivable, some cashmere sweaters are machine washable. Always check the care label for specific instructions. Use a mesh laundry bag, cold water, and the delicate cycle with low spin. Remove the sweater immediately after washing and lay flat to dry.
Drying and Storage
Never use a dryer
The heat and tumbling action of a dryer can be harmful to cashmere. Instead, lay the sweater flat on a clean towel, away from direct sunlight and heat sources. Reshape the garment gently while it's damp to ensure its original form.
Folding over hanging
Cashmere is prone to stretching, so avoid hanging the sweater for long periods. Instead, fold it neatly and store it in a cool, dry place. Use cedar blocks or lavender sachets to deter moths and add a fresh scent.
